The Benefits of Working from Home

Hello there,
We're living in trying, tough times. We've all been suddenly forced to stay in and figure out ways to carry on with our lives, our jobs and our social life. So, although everything seems to be falling apart, we must do our best to turn this crisis into and opportunity to try out new ideas, to do those things we don't usually have much time to do and to take on this challenge and make the most of it.
That's why I'm going to give this neglected -though still useful- blog a chance so that we may be able to carry on with our course, by giving you a topic for discussion, some audiovisual material to get you started and then encourage you to post your comments and interact with your classmates as much as you can. If you are not familiar with the blog, you can see there are a lot of links to interesting websites which can provide plenty of opportunities to practice your English skills, so let's not miss out on all this.
Our first question for discussion is going to be this: what are the pros and cons of working from home? To get you started, Id like you to watch this short TED talk on the issue - and also perhaps this different take on the issue. Then , leave your comments please!

To my mind, working at home has advantages and disadvantages, both to be considered. Perhaps, one of the greatest benefits is that you can suffer less stress and productivity is higher, apart from you can save time and money on travel and have more autonomy. Conversely, "presenteeism", or what is the same, working at home it´s the best way to reconcile work and family, I mean, to achieve work-life balance. However, we must bear in mind downsides too, such as it´s difficult to separate family and it´s likely you feel loneliness since you don´t have co-workers to talk to every day. The way I see it, we must find the perfect balance, as long as the work we do allows us to.

I totally agree with you, Maggie, and I guess this is the perfect time to realize the positive and negative aspects that working from home entails.

That´s is true Alejandro. Each new situation brings us new learning. Many people will realize that the work they did is perfectly compatible with working from home...and they will wonder..why do I have to go so far to work? It´s total nonsense, but for others working from home will be impossible for them, whether for the work he does or because with the family close they cannot concentrate. These days the important thing is to work, it doesn´t matter from where because apart from the fear of the virus, there is a tremendous fear of being fired or not being able to continue with your business.

I agree with Maggie when she says working from home allow people to reconcilie work and family. But people that work at home have to be very selfdisciplined. When you work from home there are many things you have to look after. You have to be able to do an eight-hours-job, look after your family, and try to have just a little of social life. There too many goals to achiev. It turns really necesary to organize our time if we want to finish everything. The selfdiscipline and perseverance are very important. Working from home doesn't mean there isn't a timetalbe to attach to. It has to be a realistic timetable where you can write down all the things to be done, the time you are going to speand to each task, leave time to rest and relax,... And, when it's finnished, just stick to it! The good thing is that is something you've made with all your needs so there is no excuse to avoid doing any of the tasks.
